Feed wastage rates vary with the different feed-out methods.

Feed-out method: Estimated amount of supplementary feed wasted
Temporary, relocatable – bare area & ring feeder 18%
Feed allocated on pastures in the paddock 9%
Semi-permanent feed-out area - compacted surface and low-cost troughing 6%
Permanent, basic but functional feed-out facility – purpose built with compacted surface and concrete troughing 2%
Permanent, minimal waste, maximum control - purpose-built feed-out facility, cement surface and one or more feed alleys 2%
Grain feeding in the dairy (rotary and herringbone) 1%
